Weekly Family Shop by Bike

    Newer Older

Yes, it can be done. The two loaded panniers had been removed by the time the picture was taken, but it shows that a weekly shop for a family of 4 can be done without motorised assistance. The local supermarket is just a mile away, but some 160 feet below us.

It would have been nicer to have been the other way round but at least this way I'm saving on brake block wear...

Great shot - and fair play to you. I always said when the kids grew out of the bike buggy I would use it like this, but to my shame I've not yet done so. It's either the climb up from Radco or Silver Street. Not a mouth watering choice with a weeks shopping, but great training for my summer ride. You've inspired me. I'm going to give it a try.

We found that the "zig-zag" route from Radco via Somervale Road and Welton Road eased the gradient somewhat, and added little to the time/mileage. We noted travel time as 5 minutes there, 10-12 minutes back. So if you take account of the time spent finding a car parking spot, walking to and from the car park and boot packing/unpacking time, this is actually quicker than using a car. There's two less goods transfers because the boxes get loaded during the checkout process and unpacked at home.

Bike and trailer. In a civilised country every home would have one. Fun, too.

      Is that a Weber Monoporter?

Have you considered adding panniers to your rack over the back tire, and a basket on the front?

As mentioned in the main caption the pair of panniers had been taken off before the photo was taken.

Seven years on, we have since progressed to an Xtracycle FreeRadical
