old flames

Newer Older

Here is another flowerless flower found in nature. This one I found on a hillside as I was walking back to my car after work. This really reminds me of a candelabra.

In English there is an idiomatic expression can't hold a candle to someone or something. It is used when comparing things. One is much better in your opinion than the rest. First recorded in 1883 in William Norris's work No New Thing he wrote:
"Edith is pretty, very pretty; but she can't hold a candle to Nellie."

Dolly Parton's song from 1980 Old Flames Can't Hold a Candle to You
"Old flames can't hold a candle to you
No one can light up the night like you do
Flickering embers of love
I've known one or two
But old flames can't hold a candle to you"
Listen.

A candlebra indeed. This works wonderfully in B&W. Also it's nice to see in the notes on the picture your process of taking this shot and how you deliberately framed the one part of the "flower" against the darker asphalt. Instant fave.

Hi Bill, it is a color shot, but definitely looks b/w. Yes, I had to look through the railing to get this, because otherwise, it was lost in all the frosty ground around it.

    Worlds apart, again:-

You and your glance make this romance too hot to handle.
Stars in the night, blazing their light,
    Can't hold a candle . . .

    you know, dearest photographer,
I have so much enjoyed our visiting together this evening!
and these earlier 46 page 47 pages etc
seem to have a different arrangement than years ago...

thank you also for your recent visits to me on flickr
i've been writing and you are always in my mind when I write...
like my muse! sending love to you and your family from George and me...
with no kitty. I think I still want pyewacket to be here with me,
like these blossom less flowers she never matured yet to
me she was the dearest sweetest most loving sweetheart around.
I miss her so so much...
goodnight dear writer, photographer, and mother of two.
    xxoo
