Porta Decumana

====================================================================

The Roman army camp of Petavonium is quite unknown, even for people interested in Roman history. It was first the camp of Legio X Gemina (of which nothing remains, being a timber structure). Then a much more permanent auxiliary camp was built in the same spot. It housed first the Ala II Flavia Hispanorum, a cavalry unit, and in the Late Empire, the Cohors II Flavia Pacatiana.

The porta decumana was one of the four main gates of a roman fort. It's obviously a modern rebuilding using the stone foundations.
