Glacial Lake Mansfield

    In the midst of glacial retreat, water melting from the peaks to the south and east was blocked by remaining ice to the west, where today's Winooski River, Lee River, and Browns River now empty into Lake Champlain. With nowhere to go, a lake formed that flooded the valley up to 650 feet elevation.
