Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) R8589 Martin Co, IN PFN

Common Buckeye (Junonia coenia) nectaring.

Martin County, Indiana, USA.

August 18, 2012.

I know there are 2 colour morphs of the Buckeye (spring and fall), but I've also noticed significant variation amongst individuals. Note the size of the eye spots on the hind wings--this one's eye spots are much smaller than the individual's above, in my Photostream.

Does anyone know if this is sexual dimorphism or just normal variation? Females are generally larger than males, but I haven't noticed if there was any wing pattern norms differentiating males and females.
