~ A Rose For Survivors and Those We've Lost ~

Why do you see so much pink every October? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign by major breast cancer organizations to increase awareness of the disease. This includes educating the public about early detection, the cause, diagnosis, treatment, and support for survivors.

Definition of Breast Cancer

All cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of cells. The typical causes of abnormal growth are mutations that happen during a cell's normal life cycle. These mutations can be random or caused by age or environmental factors. Breast cancer typically occurs when abnormal cell growth affects the lobules or milk producing glands. If left unchecked, these cells can move to the lymph nodes and from there can attack other parts of the body.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

One of the earliest signs of breast cancer is a breast lump. Initially the lump is small painless, hard, and with uneven edges. Rarely the lumps are soft, round and tender but any anomaly should be brought to the attention of your doctor. According to the American Cancer Society, swelling, skin irritation such as redness or a scaly appearance, pain in the breast or nipple, nipple inversion, nipple discharge other than milk, and an underarm lump are all warning signs and should prompt a visit to your doctor.
