Momordica charantia, Bitter Chinese Gourd.
The Bitter Chinese Gourd is green, usually oblong, and has an irregular surface with warts and 8 to 10 vertical ridges. When ripe, it turns yellowish orange in color. It can be cooked with curry to provide a bitter flavor. Also, it can be steamed or blanched and used to dip up chile sauces. It is considered as one of the most nutritious gourds, and it has medicinal properties. A compound known as "charantin" present in the bitter gourd is used in the treatment of diabetes to lower blood sugar levels. It is enriched with Vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, phosphorus and carbohydrates.
