Is this house still around? Someone told me it was gone.

There is a great illustration of this house on the cover of a vintage book about modern houses that I have.

As far as I know, the house is still around. I wonder how the glass windows hold up during Florida hurricanes, though.

It is one of Rudolph's most popular houses, and it was the first house he built in Florida that relied on air conditioning instead of natural ventilation (which made him a well-known member of the Sarasota School of architecture..)

Many critics have noted that the sun shade on the front of the house (a Sarasota School element he used in the design for the Sarasota high school addition) relates to the plan of the house beyond, tilted vertically - which he later did in the fascinating Modulightor townhouse. Also, the facade shows a lot of influence by Corbusier.

Some of the images I post are not photos I have taken, but I think that for educational purposes it would be ok to use them. Maybe your students can become members of the Paul Rudolph Flickr Group in return ;)

I think it is also on the cover of a new book called Florida Modern, that showcases several houses by a group of modernist Florida architects.

Sorry, actually this is the Milam Residence by Paul Rudolph, the one on the cover of that book I mentioned is the Goodloe Residence by William Morgan, who worked part time with Rudolph. If you haven't seen the book, you'd enjoy it. It is called Florida Modern by Jan Hochstim.

This is a pic of the book - I have to admit I'm always running into buildings by rudolph that I've never seen and thought this was something he did - now it all makes sense :)

The house is still around and the original owner still lives there!

Mister Ryan - Have you been there to see it? Do you have any photos you can share? I'd love to go see it but I'm too far away in NYC :( Thanks!
