St. Aposteln, Köln # 22
The modern altar.
St. Aposteln, the Basilica of the Holy Apostels, counts amount the famous twelve romanic churches of Cologne.
First mentioned in 965 A.D. on occasion of the funeral of Cologne archbishop Bruno the building is replaced in the 11th century by an Salic new basilica. The construction work comes to an end in the 13th century with the completion of the trefoil.
During WW II the basilica is heavily damaged. Only In 1993 restoration comes to an end and the painting of the trefoil by the artist Hermann Gottfried is finished. It certainly is one of the most interesting yet one of the most controversial artist's conception of restoring romanic churches.
