Groß St. Martin, Köln # 43
“Groß St. Martin” (Great Saint Martin Church) is one of twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne. It is situated in the heart of the old city, surrounded by apartment houses and commercial buildings.
The basilica with its three naves is one of the most prominent landmarks of Cologne.
The basilica was erected on Roman foundations during the 12th century A.D. It was first used as the collegiate church of a Benedictine monastery and later as a normal parish church. During WW II it was almost totally destroyed. Restoration work on the church only was finished in 1985. 40 years after the end of WW II “Groß St. Martin” was consecrated again.
