Balanophora fungosa 1

Found growing on a root of a volunteer papaya tree that was being removed in a private garden near Julatten, on the northern end of the Atherton Tableland, late May 2008.

Balanophora is a root parasite. The genus of fifteen species occurs all round the New World and Old World tropics. B. fungosa is the only one that occurs naturally in Australia. The light coloured buds are flower-spike buds.
