20120605_36 Cute dice snake (Natrix tessellata) looking out of the water! :D | Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
At first, all I saw was a cluster of German (or at least German-speaking) tourists leaning over the water and saying something about snakes. Until I spotted the well-camouflaged snake in question, I figured maybe they were staring at fish whilst referring to a snake-blast from the past.
Snake: *lies on bottom, contemplates fish*
Snake: *sticks head out of water*
German tourist: "'Hello, audience'! x)"
Camera: "CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK!!!!!!!!!"
Rat: "AW MAN, THE ZOOM ON THIS ONE!!!!!!!!! 8D"
German toddler: *nearly falls into lake*
Snake: "OH SHIT OH SHIT OMG OMG OMG. D:" *swims away*
I saw three dice snakes during my 4 days in Plitvice! All of them in the "lower lakes." Here is another one of whom I got a usable pic. They were my first dice snakes, too.
Wiki (not a heavily reference-laden page) says:
"This snake is not venomous. As a defense it spreads a very bad smelling secretion from its cloaca. Another defence mechanism is thanatosis, meaning playing dead."
The Swedish Wiki page claims that many dice snakes get killed by people, since they are often found near places where people swim or fish. :'(
