Spite House - 20 Prospect - Rumford, Maine - May 2010

The "Spite" House - 20 Prospect Avenue - This brick, Victorian Style, four story house, was built in 1901 by Charles Cheney, who owned the Cheney Opera House (now the Elk's Lodge). Out of spite, he designed the house unusually tall and narrow and placed it at the edge of his lot nearest to his neighbor, Glen Stephens, son of John Stephens (after whom the Stephens High School was named). This was done to block Stephens' view of the spectacular nearby falls. Used for many years as a boarding house, it has recently been renovated as a single-family home.
