Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Millenium Park
The audience filling the stage was an ecstatic moment that the show had made possible.
It can be a precarious thing for a band to open the divide between audience and performer. I've seen videos of The Stones and James Brown having to plead and scold people off. Once Seun was done and asked them a few times they returned to the theater willingly, for it was all one space.
When he invited everyone onstage, for a while it was hard to tell where the stage ended and began. Then I realized, I couldn't see Seun or the other band members. Just his voice and the music rising out of the crowd. The dancing and rhythm the crowd had already been reveling in seemed to break free.
Every audience and performer collaborate in a show. But the exchange in this one seemed effortless and almost levitating. A real tribute to the ensemble.
