Twisted bristlecone pine

I had a chance to stop at the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest on the way from Bishop, CA to Las Vegas, NV in October 2011. This was my first visit there and debated if it was worth the detour - it definitely was!! I ended up at Schulman Grove on a very clear crisp October morning and had the area to myself. The visitor center was located at over 10,000 feet and the trails go up from there - so there was a lot of huffing and puffing but the sight of the trees keeps drawing you on. I don't know much about trees but these bristlecone pines can live to be over 4,000 years old (the oldest ones are not identified for their protection). The shapes are impressive and other- worldly. If you have a chance, check out this area. The trees are great and the views of the Sierras are absolutely incredible!
