The Bloody Lane, a killing field at Antietam National Battlefield

I had a chance to visit Antietam National Battlefield in October 2010 on a trip back East. Antietam was a major battle in the American Civil War; on 17 September 1862 this was the bloodiest single-day battle in US history with 23,000 casualties.

It's always amazing to walk these battlefield and try to envision what happened there - hard to believe it actually happened.

Antietam is fairly compact; unfortunately on the day I visited a lot of the park roads were closed for paving; I saw what I could and will make it a point to check it out again next time I'm back there.
