I have been terribly taken by the images of bead embroidery on Flickr, like this, and this, and oh heaven... this! Which led me to this blog and her book/instructions on how to actually achieve this look.
And so began this piece, my first bead embroidery adventure... OK, so I lie, the first one I pulled out and started again, but this is the first finished!
I have discovered a lot of things whilst learning to do this...
- I need more seed beads. I just don't have that many colours and sizes. (OK, so its my excuse for doing some more shopping!).
- I am a 'pre-planner', so the freeform style of 'lets just create and see where it takes me' isn't for me - hence pulling out the first attempt. Drawing a quick sketch and then eyeballing position and colour is much more my style and actually easier for my brain. No plan just made me stall on all the decisions needing to be made about balance. Argh!
- I've not yet decided if it is better to have beads that are all uniform in width and depth, or to have them all random like mine tend to be. The weird sizes are great for filling gaps, but not so great for consistency.
Anyhoo, this was fun! I really liked it. This little piece is only a couple inches tall and is actually going into a much larger piece. I am going to do another 9 pieces in total, so much time to practice!
Does anyone who 'beads' have any advice for me? You know, that one tip that you wish you knew when you first started?
