Entrance: 320 East Grand Boulevard, El Tovar Apartments--Detroit MI
The recessed, arched entrance of the El Tovar (the surrounding ornamentation is called an archivolt) barely hints at the panoply of Art Deco, Mission, and Spanish Colonial Revival details at this four-story apartment building. The name "El Tovar" (which may be derived from the name of a village in Northern Spain, Tobar) is presented using an unfolding "scroll." Weidmaier and Gay were the architects of this 1928 effort.
The El Tovar is part of a National Register Historic District and has its own place as a National Register-listed building.
