Mask: Entrance, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History--Detroit MI

    Newer Older

A mask by Richard Bennett decorates the entry of the Museum of African American History. This is one of two such works at the entrances to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The formal name of the work is "Sentry." It is of aluminum and gold and is modeled after a mask of the Bambara people of Mali. The sculptor is from Detroit.

Wonderful close-up of the building detail. I tend to stand back and try to get the "big picture". You inspire me to take a closer look.

Yes, this is a beautiful mask, and I helped with the gold plated finish.
I was an electroplater at an electroplating company in Detroit.
Mr. Bennett came in with several of his pieces to have us gold plate them, and I was in charge of all of the gold finishes for our company.
When he explained what the pieces were to be for, I can't tell you how proud I was to be able to leave my mark, be it ever so small, in the best city in the United States.
Mr. Bennett is an extremely talented artist, and a gentlemans gentleman. It was my pleasure to work with him for such a beautiful piece of Detroit's Heart.
