Great Tailed Grackle

The Great Tailed Grackle is a feisty, boisterous scavenger with jet black plumage and bright yellow eyes. His calls are a variety of piercing chirps and whistles which can become very annoying. These pigeon-sized birds seem to communicate from tree to tree calling and answering one another. This male Grackle is a member of a large breeding colony that returns to California City Bird Park every spring. A typical trait of this breed is gazing skyward as if anticipating rain. It may be a breeding gesture. This photo was taken on March 17, 2011 in California City, California, US, using a Sony DSC-H5 digital camera.
