Calkins Pharmacy and branch post office, 324 S. State Street, Ann Arbor, 1907

Click on "all sizes" to view the larger version of this scene. The Calkins Pharmacy -- later Calkins-Fletcher -- went out of business around 1955. After being occupied for nearly 40 years by a bookstore (Follett's), this space is now the south half of the Espresso Royale cafe, where folks have been sipping coffee treats since the early 1990s.

As a kid in the early 1950s, I could have gone inside the Calkins-Fletcher Drug Store and had a look around -- but I don't think I ever did. At that time it probably didn't look at all like this, anyway.
