In the month of Ashwayujamasam Hindus observe a 10 day ceremony of celebrations to honor the mother Goddess and triumph of Lord Rama over the demon Ravana. Dasara also symbolizes the triumph of warrior Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishashura. Thus, its a celebration of victory over evil.
Dasara is the last day of navaratri also called as Vijayadasami; on this day effigies of Ravana are burnt as this day marks the victory of Rama over Ravana.
