Chambers Bay Golf opened officially on Saturday, June 23, 2007 in University Place, Washington. The Scottish Links Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, who happened to be trying out the course today. It is on Pierce County Sewer Utility owned property and was historically a gravel mine.
The name of Chambers comes from Judge Thomas McCutcheon Chambers who had a land claim here on the previous Hudson Bay property about 1847. It included the mouth of the nearby creek which became known as Chambers Creek. Chambers was of Scotch-Irish descent, and his first marriage was to a first cousin of Pres. Andrew Jackson. Pres. Jackson gave them 500 acres of land in Tennesee as a wedding gift. They came to America and lived on the land and supervised the cotton and tobacco crops of Pres. Jackson before coming to the Oregon Territory.
My oldest granddaughter is the 3rd great-granddaughter of Thomas McCutcheon Chambers.
