Darfurians refugees in Eastern Chad

Chad / Darfurian refugees from Sudan / Gaga camp (21 276 refugees, UNHCR figures, 30 september 2011), 40 kilometers west from Farchana UNHCR sub-office located 120 km east from Abeche, located 900 kilometer east from N'Djamena the chadian capital. The camp is located 71 km from the sudanese border, and was opened in may 2005. A young female refugee dig her market gardening plot with a spade, in an Africare project, an ngo partner of UNHCR. Alternately she breaks tiny dyke separating her plot in pieces to water each area. 600 potential beneficiairies identified as vulnerables (women alione or widow with many children, ...) and volunteer got a plot and the support of agricultural expert who advises them. Six sites have been created. On that one, 125 beneficiaries have a plot. Some of the beneficiairies try to sell vegetables in Abeche, the biggest city in eastern Chad (77 kms west from Gaga), but the bussiness cannot be profitable because of the transport costs. / UNHCR / F.
