Silent
Silent Sam, the Confederate Soldier's memorial on McCorkle Place at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the background is the Unsung Founders Memorial.
The two inscriptions read "To the sons of the University who entered the war of 1861 - 1865 in answer to the call of their country and whose lives taught the lesson of their great commander that duty is the sublimest word in the English language" and "Erected under the auspices of the NC Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy aided by the alumni of the university."
It was erected in 1913 for the 50th anniversary of the American Civil War.
