canada malting silos, toronto, ontario

View from the Toronto Island Airport ferry Marilyn Bell i. The ferry ride takes 90 seconds to cross the 121m Western Gap shipping channel to reach Billy Bishop Airport.

The silos are an important example of modernist industrial architecture- - -stark functionalism and the use of concrete were important innovations. The original 15 silos were built in 1928 and are 120 feet / 37 metres tall. A subsequent addition in 1944, added more storage, with the silos reaching 150 feet / 46 meters. The silos ceased operations in the 1980's. Demolition of ancillary buildings / equipment began in 2010. The silos will remain standing but there are no development plans for the site.
