King Eider, Monroe Co. NY, 7 March 2010
A very bad photo of an immature male King Eider. Hint: The bird is flying to the left. Large duck (roughly WWSC sized) largely very dark brown in overall coloration. Bright pinkish colored bill. White breast and very limited white on sides of rump--otherwise at this distance appeared all dark. Flight steady and even about 2 feet above water the entire time. I ran back to the car and got my camera and was able to get this VERY DISTANT and BAD photograph. Really no other similar species are brown overall with pinkish bill and white breast. Bill not as long or as sloping as in Common Eider (and COEI bill color is never pink). I admit that much of this is hard to see in the photo, but was easily seen through my scope. In any event, this is for documentation purposes only.
