After scrambling down a steep slope, below the Cañari face totem at Ingapirca, we came across our first obstacle, a roaring river. We soon located a red, metal cable cart and began to shuttle ourselves across one by one with a rope pully. When the last of our group climbed aboard, a woman in a purple shawl and baby strapped on her back, approached us. She had a prominent scowl and immediately demanded that we pay the $1 toll to cross her cable cart. After many attempts of negotiations, on our part, we payed our dues and continued on our way.
