Anapji Pond

One of Korea's most scenic spots, Anapji Pond was built by King Munmu of Silla in 674, and was originally part of a larger palace complex. After the fall of Silla, the pond fell into disuse for centuries before being restored --- along with many of ancient Gyeongju's other historic sites --- by President Park Chung-hee in the mid-1970s. The pond was built according to Taoist principles, and in fact was designed as a microcosm of the Taoist fairy world.
