water for cuenca

Starting at about 12,000 feet the Paramo is one of the most stunning and unique ecosystems in Ecuador. It receives massive amounts of rain and collects water in its lakes and marshy soil. Seen here in Cajas national park is one of these lakes which provides clean drinking water for the city of Cuenca below. At the top of the Andes few trees or plants can grow and only a select few animals sustain themselves however, the Paramo is extremely important for the people and animals living near it.
