Portrait – Gregg the maniacal mechanic
This is a composite image/photo illustration that I made using three photos... one of the subject and scene, one shot of flames coming off a blowtorch, and an image of a spark shower. The subject is the lead mechanic at Calgary’s premier custom 4x4 shop, he's as passionate about 4x4's and custom vehicles as most flickerites are about photography. I'm happy with how it turned out, I was shooting for a personality portrait. I would have liked to have captured a slightly more aggressive pose and I also wanted to attempt this photo as a single exposure, but timing just didn't allow for the right conditions.
I shot the photo of the subject outside using a Helios 44-3 set to f8 attached to Sony a6000 set to 100iso and 1/120th of a second. I placed 2 2'x3' soft boxes between the jeep and the subject, aimed the at subject I placed a Minolta 4000af in the soft box to the left of the subject and a YN-560ii in the soft box to the right. Strobes were triggered using PT-04 triggers/receivers. The other photos were shot in dark environments, so that only the light was captured and then brought into photoshop and set to screen mode to eliminate their black backgrounds.
