Twisted Pine Hoppy Knight

A bottle of Hoppy Knight from Twisted Pine Brewing in Boulder, Colorado.

Hoppy Knight is a 85 IBU, 7% abv India-style black ale (or black IPA if you like) brewed with Carafa malt and heavily dry-hopped. It was brewed to celebrate Twisted Pine’s 15th Anniversary and was named after its founder Gordon Knight.

The beer poured a clear, red tinged, deep brown color - almost like Coca Cola - with a thin beige head. It had a piny hop aroma with light roasted malt notes. Mouthfeel was surprisingly light, almost watery. Flavor started out with a hint of malt before the citrusy and piny hops took over. Wow, massive hoppiness with a long, bitter finish! The malt couldn't stand up to the hops, so the beer felt unbalanced and more like a west coast IPA than a black IPA.
