HaandBryggeriet Akevitt Porter

The back side label of HaandBryggeriet Akevitt Porter shows that this bottle was from batch No 225, brewed 12 May 2009.

To date four different batches of Akvavit barrel aged porters have been brewed by HaandBryggeriet:

1) Batch No 147, brewed 20 March 2008, was named Aqua Vita Porter. Because of its lower alcohol, just 7% abv, and 7 months long barrel aging it had a very thin porter body that failed to support the strong balsamic vinegar taste. Most people were unhappy with it.

2) Batch No 225, this one, was a different beast and the first one named Akevitt Porter. With a strength of 10% abv and only 3 months on Akvavit barrels it was more balanced, with a richer porter body supporting the wood and Akvavit notes. It was a winner from day 1!

3) Batch No 247, brewed 30 September 2009, was made after the same recipe as #225 and matured on the same Akvavit barrels. Which was unfortunate, because it turned out that after only one use the Akvavit barrels had lost their oomph - they had no more Akvavit to impart to the beer which felt sweet and dead compared to batch No 225.

4) Batch No 288, brewed on 18 May 2010, was brewed just like the previous two batches but matured on fresh Akvavit barrels and thus came out very similar to batch No 225. It's a great batch too.
