Dark Horse Perkulator Coffee Dopplebock

A bottle of Perkulator from Dark Horse Brewing Company in Marshall, Michigan.

Perkulator is a 7,5% abv doppelbock brewed with organic coffee beans. It poured a dark redish brown color with a beige head. Roasted aroma with notes of fresh coffee and a mild malt sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium heavy. Flavor had a light caramel sweetness that was balanced by the fresh coffee and roasted malt. Nice bitter roasted finish. This doppelbock is not as sweet as some doppelbocks can be and it may feel a bit thin for that reason, but it was still a very enjoyable and drinkable beer.

This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI.
