This old house was built at the turn of the century and still lived in until the 60s according to a family member who stopped to talk. On the edge of the Waiuku Forest, the farm land runs down to the Waikato River.
The land here is black sand and not great farming country. But only a few hundred meters behind this house towards the coast is the Waikato North Head Coastal Sand Mine which is the sole supplier of iron sand to the Glenbrook steel mill. I could hear it working while taking this photo.
