HMS Speedy at Spithead

A Boeing jetfoil, the 199-ton HMS Speedy (P-296) had a short experimental life with the Royal Navy, being commissioned into service in 1980 and withdrawn from service in 1982. She could only operate at up to sea state 5, had only 10 hours' endurance on the foils at 45 kts and a range of 500 miles. There were also problems about her capabilities when not foil-borne. This photo was taken in late 1980. She was eventually sold in 1986.
