The Narrows - Zion National Park
The Narrows is a slot canyon found in the Northern part of Zion canyon. It was rated #5 in the National Geographic ranking of Americas Best 100 Adventures.
Reaching The Narrows starts at the end of a mile long river walk in the man area of Zion Canyon. At the end of this river walk, you have the choice to dive right in and start hiking upstream, or turn back in wonder of what's around the bend as you stare down into the canyon.
When we hiked the conditions were 38ºF water temps and the stream was moving at 128 cubic feet per second. The temperature alone required a dry suit and layering up in warm clothes underneath. At least a third of the route is done in water. Depending on the water level, it is very possible that you will be up to your chest in water, and at other times, only your knees - thighs. It's been abnormally warm at this time of year, so melting in the North came a bit early, and the river was getting higher as our day at the park went by.
We did about 3-4 miles upstream and then turned back. We were losing daylight and temperatures as the sun was starting to set on our way out of the canyon.
