Wasp Field digger wasp (Mellinus arvensis). Family Crabronidae bringing home a blow fly Keepers Cottage 2.9.2012 (1)

We spent a most enjoyable week in a self catering cottage deep in the Cumbrian countryside.

Just outside our cottage was a path with pebbles set in sand and in the sand a colony of digger wasps had set up a colony

.

We spent hours just fascinated by their actions.

In our world it is called 'bringing home the bacon', for this chap it was all about bringing home the blo fly.

As you can see it was quite a task as these flies are large and heavy.

The following images suggest the struggle to get it 'home'

But oh my poor knees and hips - must let younger people try these low angle shots!!!
