Split & Trogir
The ancient town of Split started simply as the grand retirement palace of Emperor Diocletian (a native of Croatia and from a slave family before rising to power). The Palace later became a refuge for Romans driven out of Slavonia and for Slavs coming into the region. We enjoyed the "2 Cellos" there and also a day trip to the splendid city of Trogir, in itself a bastion of towers, cathedrals, and spectacular views.
