DoD staffer's notes from 9/11 - 2:40 PM

This is the raw scan of Defense Department staffer Stephen Cambone's notes from meetings with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the afternoon of September 11, 2001 (see preceeding pages for closeups and negative versions of the documents). The documents were obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. Cambone's notes were cited heavily in the 9/11 Commission Report's reconstruction of the day's events.

This note documents Donald Rumsfeld's 2:40 PM instructions to General Myers to find the "[b]est info fast . . . judge whether good enough [to] hit S.H. [Saddam Hussein] at same time - not only UBL [Usama Bin Laden]" (as discussed on p. 334-335 of the 9/11 Commission Report and in Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack).

In addition, the document confirms the contents of CBS News' Sept. 4, 2002 report "Plans For Iraq Attack Began on 9/11," which quoted Rumsfeld's notes as stating: "Go massive . . . Sweep it all up. Things related and not." The contents of the CBS News report were not included in the 9/11 Commission Report or Woodward's Plan of Attack, and to my knowledge, have not been independently confirmed by any other source. After the Rathergate fiasco, I wondered if CBS had been fooled into publishing a story that was too good to be true.

Finally, this document unveils a previously undisclosed part of the discussion. Several lines below the "judge whether good enough [to] hit S.H. at same time" line, Cambone's notes from the conversation read: "Hard to get a good case."

For further discussion of this document, see the Guardian article "Blogger bares Rumsfeld's post 9/11 orders," or Andrew Sullivan's post "An Army of Davids."

  • flaygee 9y I get it. The huge revelation here is that the SECDEF wanted to know if it was possible to hit SH at the same time as UBL since we already knew who the bad guys were. He is the SECDEF by the way.....and his business is about war.Without diverging into the reasons for being in Iraq or all the Politicians on both sides of the Isle;not to mention Military personel, and a former President named Bill Clinton who considered SH a huge threat......tell me what is so enlightening about these memos;only one of which you bother to paraphrase? I have to say that this profound disvovery through the FOIA is monumental. Say do you guys know who killed Kennedy? Ok... if about area 51? common now surely you guys have some alien photos?

The revelation is that the US was out to get Iraq and used 9/11 as an excuse to do so. Similar to Oklahoma when the US immediately blamed Osama Bin Laden and was ready to go after him for NO VALID REASON but there own fear. Low and behold with a little investigation the true culprit turns out to be an american Tim McVeigh.

The point is: the US government cannot go starting wars against countries because they don't like one person or for there own personal gains - in the case of Iraq - it most definitely has to do with oil.

US propaganda has to stop sometime - heck I bet US schools teach the kids that the US won the Vietman war or better yet that they won the war of 1812.

flaygee. It's reported James Niles did the fatal head shot. Last heard in Joilette prison.
In view of the information used to start war with SH it appears some of the excuses were manufactured by the PTB.
rider 123. I don't think they had any fear other than what you said- "it most definitely has to do with oil."
