Researching Artisan Communities: Banaras Granite Business

Varanasi, also known as Banaras, is a pre-industrial city popularly known as a pilgrimage site for many religion. However, Varanasi is also home to many artisan communities specializing in silk weaving, stone work and wood work. The city itself seems to be organized in different districts from exploring the lanes of wood cutters making Russian dolls, and another where you can here the rhythm of the looms weaving saris. This picture shows a granite sculpture business that trade not only within the city to local temples and homes but also outside for the artisan communities have become strong traders in the national economy.
