black zebra swallowtail caterpillar

Another zebra swallowtail caterpillar, this time the mainly black form.

In this area, the ones I've observed hatch out solid black, then develop yellow and white stripes on a black or green background.

You know why I like insects? And plants, and little critters in general? Because they're not people. They're not weird, they don't get defensive when you're trying to have a reasonable conversation with them, they don't decide that their authority is being threatened and storm off angrily, spewing forth that they're the king and no one else gets an opinion, ever... nope, never had an insect do that to me.

I am confirmed in my belief that insects and plants are often much better company than people. (Which is not meant in any way to insult you wonderful Flickr people, despite the rather all-inclusive wording... are you sure you're all people out there? Suddenly I'm envisioning giant butterflies, beetles, and caterpillars sitting at keyboards, typing with their little buggie feet... that's kinda a fun thought...)
