Green June Beetle, Cotinis nitida

Explore #486, August 2, 2008

The beetles were out in force last night, buzzing around my backyard at dusk. Most of them were much too busy to allow themselves to be photographed, but this fellow (or lady?) was up for a little photoshoot.

My insect id being a bit rusty, I thought it was a Japanese beetle, but after checking out Bug Guide, I'm going with Green June Beetle until someone tells me otherwise.

Check out those long, shiny green legs -- this guy/gal's a looker!

He's perched on a yellow passionflower, Passiflora lutea.
