Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar

This is an early instar of the Spicebush Swallowtail. This guy is about 3 days old in this photo.
When he reaches the 5th instar, he'll be bigger, fatter, bright green, and will still have his fabulous big eye spots. He'll also have several rows of small, bright blue spots running down each side. Right before he pupates, he'll turn bright yellow or orange.
As they get bigger, these cats spend most of the day folded up inside a leaf, and do most of their feeding at night.
