Posted this more for the water and reflection than the cormorant really ....Recently I noticed a cormorant regularly sat to dry out on a platform in the middle of an ornamental pond in a local industrial estate . I went today to see if I could get a pic ...I did not think I would get anywhere near to be honest but the bird was very tolerant and I got this which I am pleased with . the bird was very secure and even when I moved closer it just casually popped in the water ..while it was in the water I moved closer and was amazed that it then returned to the platform ...I can only assume that with people about in the week it has become used to people on the edge of the pond . I will try again in the week and see if it is still so tolerant .
ps the bird's eye is cloudy because of the nictitating membrane ..a third concealed eyelid that sweeps horizontally across the eye like a windscreen wiper. The nictitating membrane also covers the eye and acts as a contact lens in many aquatic birds when they are under water.
