Hunting through the archives and found this fellow enjoying a feed. I was actually very surprised that we were able to get quite close to these magnificent animals. I think they were more scared of us than we were of them.
The Water Buffalo is a cow like animal that is found in Asia. It was introduced to the Northern Territory as a beast of burden used to carry equipment from place to place. They escaped their slavery and became feral. The Water Buffalo mainly lives in fresh water marshes and billabongs (their range can expand quickly in the Wet season), and it's only natural predator is the Saltwater Crocodile. The Water Buffalo has many effects on our environment, some are positive but most are negative. The Water Buffalo eats a lot of food and scientists use this to get rid of plants that are at an uncontrollable growing rate. This can also be a downside as the Water Buffalo eats food that our native animals enjoy.
