Loon Protecting Its Chick
This is a loon actually trying to get us away from the mom and baby (or the father and baby). I'm fairly certain the young chick could not dive yet so they were forced to swim away like ducks rather than loons (for those unfamiliar with loons, they are sort of a penguin like bird, only improved, they can also fly!!)
Lows Lake, a wilderness paddling area, is NY's 2nd largest loon nesting site. Approx 30 nesting pairs of loons live on the 14 mile stretch from the Lower Dam to western shores. And my guess is all 30 pairs could be heard during the loon party Saturday night which was a spectacular display of hoots, wails and tremolos.
