McKees Half Falls, Susquehanna River, PA

    Newer Older

The most technical single rapid of the 50 mile stretch we paddled. A quick scout from a rock in the river and then we ran through it smoothly with no problems. The scattered rapids and riffles over the next 30 miles were actually more abusive to the boat. Lots of rock gardens and scratchy rapids with very little power to manuver the boat quickly.

Two humans and a dog paddling 50 miles over 2.5 days down the Middle Susquehanna from Hummels Wharf to City Island in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Very nice river despite it's proximity to Harrisburg and other urban features. Of course part of the appeal was paddling down the more rural river right into dowtown Harrisburg. Next time we do the 80 river miles from Harrisburg to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

This is a fine picture. McKees Half Falls is the site of the world's greatest rest stop! I must have spent time there on about 50 occasions when traveling down to the DC area from Rochester. A most relaxing place.

Sounds like a lot of fun! I would love to paddle the river. I just took a day trip down to Havre de Grace in Maryland to see where the river empties into the bay. That should be a fun trip.

Looking through your photo tour got me more revved then ever to do this stretch of the mighty Susq. I have been passively planning this trip for several years now. Having canoed the river in tiny segments over many years (lock haven to dalmatia), some parts more than others, this is going to be THE summer. Instead of starting in Sunbury though (I know that stretch too well), I'm starting seven miles up Penns creek. Thank you so much for sharing the photos.
