Autumn Foliage On The Helderberg Escarpment
For this shot, I risked life, limb, and worse my money. Unfortunately, unlike the state forest preserve lands and state forest, NYS Parks are created and regulated with the urban idiot in mind. Rather than allow people to make judgements, NYS Parks and PIP allow you to do only what they believe is safe. Basically, you can only do what the sign says you can do. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the DEC and it's lands (Forest Preserve), which unless in rare instances has specific regulations, allows you to set off on your own, and do whatever you feel is in your best interest.
The photo was taken on the illegal side of a fence marked every 18 inches with a sign stating it was illegal to cross the fence, and violators would be prosecuted IF they didn't fall to their deaths.
Luckily, New York is just a few steps behind California and Massachusetts in going bankrupt, and there were no park personnel to harass me.
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to set off on their own, and no obstacles should be placed in their path; let them take risks, for godsake, let them get lost, sunburnt, stranded, drowned, eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches - that is the right and privilege of any free American." - Edward Abbey
