The "Black-capped Tanager" is found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and heavily degraded former forest. It is one of the few species in the genus that shows obvious sexual dichromatism, with males primarily grey-blue in color with a distinctive black cap, and females yellow-green without a black cap.
